Yes, it sounds paradoxical.
But according to a well-known health psychologist, stress can be very beneficial in prevention of heart attack and general improvement in health.
What is stress
Anything that challenges our mental and physical state can be classified as stress. All of us experience stress on a daily basis in various degrees.
Prolonged stress can have serious implications on our health. And many medical experts agree that stress plays major role in every disease.
When we are stressed…
- Hormonal glands are overworked and they become fatigued
- Digestive system slows down significantly
- Blood pressure rises rapidly
- Immune system operates at a very low level
- Muscles become tense
- Heart rate increases
In fact every part of our body is affected by stress.
Psychologist Kelly McGonigal argues stress is only dangerous when we think it is.
So, changing the way we think about the stress will change our body’s response to stress.
In other words the body responds to our thoughts. If we perceive stress as a positive event, the body will respond in a positive manner, and there will be no damage.
In fact the healing might occur. This is due to a hormone Oxytocin which is produced during the stressful event. Oxytocin is powerful anti-inflammatory and it plays major role in protecting cardio-vascular system during the stress.
It is also called a cuddle hormone, because it is produced in greater quantities when we hug someone.
All these makes perfect sense… stress is created by a perception of an event.
